UK:British police arrested three men yesterday in connection with the July 7th, 2005, suicide bomb attacks that killed 52 commuters on London's transport system.

The men were arrested by counter-terrorism police "on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism" in the north of England, a police statement said.

Two were arrested at Manchester airport where they were due to fly to Pakistan. The third was arrested in a house in Leeds, the city that was home to three of the suicide bombers.

The suspects were taken to a central London police station to be questioned. Searches were under way at five houses in the Leeds area and two premises in east London.

No one has yet been charged in connection with the attacks, in which all four bombers died.

Earlier yesterday 22 people were arrested during a police crackdown on illegal passport factories and suppliers in London.

More than 100 officers carried out a series of raids at 13 addresses across the city.

During the raids, £40,000 (€60,000) in cash was seized as well as a variety of false passports, driving licences and foreign identity documents.

Nineteen people were arrested and taken into police custody suspected of a range of crimes including unlawful facilitation, identity card offences and possession and conspiracy to produce and distribute false documents.

A spokesman for the police described it as one of its most significant co-ordinated crackdowns on illegal passport factories and suppliers.

Det Chief Insp John Kielty said: "The Metropolitan Police take these criminal networks very seriously. The production of false passports enables others to commit a range of serious crime. This operation tackles the criminals who try to hide their true identities from enforcement authorities." - (Reuters/PA)
