Three 17-year-olds killed in collisions on the roads

Three teenagers were killed on the roads in counties Tipperary and Dublin early yesterday morning.

David McNamara (17), of Knocka, Drom, Co Tipperary, and Colm Tierney (17), of Erril, Portlaoise, Co Laois, were killed on the main Templemore to Roscrea Road at Borrisbeg, shortly after midnight yesterday.

The accident happened when the red Toyota Starlet car in which they were travelling was in collision with a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Both men were brought to Nenagh hospital where Mr Tierney, the passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at 2.30am. Mr McNamara was transferred to Limerick Regional Hospital, where he died at 7.15 am.

Mr Tierney had just started an apprenticeship at a garage in Thurles.

The male driver and female passenger in the four-wheel drive were not seriously injured. Gardaí in Templemore would like to speak to anyone who saw the car travelling between Templemore and Roscrea. They can be contacted on 0504-32630.

In Co Dublin, a 17-year-old man was killed when the green Mitsubishi Colt he was driving collided with a tree and wall in Shankill, at about 2.30 am yesterday. The crash happened on Shanganagh Road.

The youth was taken to Loughlinstown hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Gardaí in Shankill would like to speak to anyone who saw the car in the Ballybrack/Shankill area and can be contacted on 01-6665900.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Limerick investigating the death of a cyclist are seeking witnesses. A 31-year-old woman, Nadia Lesceur, a native of France, was killed when her bicycle was involved in a collision with a truck on Plassey Park Road in the city at around 4pm on Wednesday. She was taken to St John's Hospital in Limerick and pronounced dead.
