GARDAI in Midleton, Co Cork, have confirmed that an investigation is under way into how six Oireachtas envelopes were used to send threatening letters to councillors.
Two members of the Midleton UDC, Mr Gerry O'Sullivan and Ms Mary Woods, as well as members of a residents' association in the town, were among those who received the letters objecting to a proposed UDC housing scheme. The photocopied letters included the words: "Better keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than open it and remove the doubt."
