About 30 people were injured, six of them seriously, when two trains collided head-on near Purkersdorf, west of Vienna, Red Cross officials said tonight.

The accident occurred after one of the train drivers overlooked a stop signal, causing the crash, the officials said.

A Red Cross press officer said about 100 medics from nearby towns were taking care of those injured. They were taken to the scene by several medical helicopters and more than 20 Red Cross vehicles.

The Austrian Automobile Club said the main Western railway line was interrupted for several hours, and international and other long-distance trains had to be rerouted.
