Ten people were killed and a one-year-child was among 12 wounded in explosions and shootings in India's Kashmir state, police said today.

"A woman pedestrian was killed and seven people, including two paramilitary troopers and the child, were wounded when a grenade exploded in a street in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir," a police statement said.

Pedestrians and shoppers left their belongings behind and ran away after the loud explosion, an official said.

Separatist guerrillas threw the grenade at a paramilitary patrol near a crowded street crossing, but it missed and exploded on the road, an official of the paramilitary Border Security Force said.

No guerrilla group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A government statement in Kashmir's newspapers today said separatist violence in the strife-torn region has increased 55 per cent in the past 10 months over the same period last year.

There were 3,882 incidents of violence during the period, against 2,503 last year, the statement said.

It said at least 3,160 people were killed in the incidents this year, but gave no total figure for last year.
