Hundreds of telephone and broadband customers in Co Clare were still without a service last night after “fairly significant” damage was caused to a new fibre-optic cable, writes Pat Flynn.

Eircom said it was not possible to say when a full service would resume and that engineers were still assessing the situation.

The breakdown occurred at around 11am.

The company said the “fibre break” occurred on the outskirts of Ennis yesterday morning, however, it was not just Eircom customers who were affected.

Homes and businesses who receive their services through other providers who use the Eircom infrastructure were also hit by outage.
