London - New numbers for eight million telephone users will come into effect during Easter Weekend in 2000, telephone executives announced yesterday. The code and number changes will cover telephones in London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Cardiff and Northern Ireland. The date for the switch has been set for April 22nd.

In London, 0171 numbers will change to 020 with a 7 prefixing local numbers. The 0181 code numbers will begin 020 8. The Northern Ireland code will become 028 with various prefixes for local numbers, Cardiff numbers will begin 029 20, Portsmouth numbers 023 93 and Southampton numbers 023 80.
