A teenager has been remanded in custody after being charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a father-of-four in Newry.

Michael Jason Smith (18) with an address at Main Avenue, appeared at Newry Magistrate's Court today charged with the murder of taxi-driver Stiofan Loughran on Thursday.

A police inspector told the court he believed he could connect the accused to that charge and one of assault on one of Mr Loughran's sons.

He confirmed, in response to defence questions, Jason Smith had co-operated with police.

Mr Smith was remanded in custody until next month.
