A 16-year-old girl has died in hospital after she was knocked down while crossing Annesley Bridge in Dublin, the scene of a fatal road collision involving a stolen car earlier this month.

The second-level student from East Wall had been crossing the bridge in Fairview at 11.30 on Friday night when the accident occurred.

She was removed to the Mater hospital and later transferred to Beaumont hospital where she died on Saturday evening from the serious head injuries she received.

As friends gathered at the bridge to lay flowers to their school friend yesterday morning, Elizabeth Kehoe, a local, of Faith Avenue in Fairview, said neighbours had been shocked to learn of a second fatality at the bridge in just seven days.

On the previous weekend, a young male driver died when the car he was driving went out of control at Annesley Bridge and crashed into a street light and parking meter.

Three female passengers were later taken to hospital and one of the injured girls later died in the Mater hospital.

The Black Honda Civic involved in the road collision had earlier been reported stolen to gardaí and had come to garda attention prior to the fatal collision.

Kenneth Dunne, from East Wall Road, yesterday described the section of the road where the teenager died as treacherous due to its steepness which can often leave pedestrians unaware of approaching traffic.

There are no pedestrian traffic lights on the bridge itself. Instead, pedestrians are required to cross at Poplar Row and North Strand Road in order to continue on to East Wall Road.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Limerick are investigating a collision between a motorcycle and car in which a 20-year-old man was killed.

The collision occurred at Ballybricken on the Herbertstown Road about seven miles from Limerick city at 11am yesterday.

The victim was removed from the scene by ambulance to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick. Gardaí at Roxboro Road are investigating the incident.
