The Government has approved draft legislation for the establishment of a self-regulating teaching council, similar to the Medical Council, for first and second-level teachers, the Minister for Education, Mr Martin, said in Cork yesterday.
The council's primary role would be to set and promote high standards among teachers and it would play an important role in enhancing the status of the teaching profession, he said.
