First published way back in 1984 in America, Nunn's novel is a high-octane thriller set among the gilded and bronzed, muscled gods who frequent the surfing territory of Huntington Beach. Ike Tucker arrives there in search of news of his sister, and on the prowl for the three men who may possibly have done her harm. Tucker is a loner, a hard taciturn man whose one desire in life is to find the ultimate wave that will bear him into surfing heaven. But the quest for his missing sister becomes intermixed with this dream of green water apocalypse, and, in a climax that reeks of fire and brimstone, a conclusion of sorts is reached. Nunn's crackling, with-it prose admirably suits the content of his story, and the result is a thriller placed in a very original setting. So wax up your board and prepare for that wall of white water to hit.
