Lewes - An angry swan helped foil the escape of a suspected shoplifter by cornering him as he tried to cross a river, police said yesterday.

PC Karen Taylor tackled the 15-year-old youth after spotting him make off with a bottle of vodka in Lewes, East Sussex.

After he managed to get away, she and colleagues gave chase, but the teenager was stopped in his tracks when he plunged into the River Ouse and straight into the path of a swan guarding its young.
