British army bomb disposal experts carried out two controlled explosions on a suspect device in the Bogside area of Derry early yesterday morning.

The device was strapped to security railings outside the offices of Derry Credit Union in Abbey Street, beside an old people's home. The RUC said that at 1.41 a.m. a local clergyman's received an anonymous phone call from a man who claimed to represent the "Continuity IRA". The caller who did not give any code word, said that a bomb had been abandoned in Abbey Street due to police activity in the area.
