Jakarta - Indonesia's former President Suharto failed to appear at the opening of his long-awaited trial on corruption charges yesterday.
Chief Judge Lalu Mariyun declared the trial open, and the court was waiting to hear arguments from the lawyers of the ailing Mr Suharto, whom many expected to defy a court order to appear at the trial on the grounds of ill health.
