A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Peru today, leaving seven people needing hospital treatment and knocking over some buildings already weakened by a devastating tremor last month, officials said.
Fearing a repeat of a June 23 quake that killed 77 people and left tens of thousands homeless, residents rushed from their shaking homes into streets during the latest tremor that lasted about a minute.
The quake was the strongest so far of the hundreds of aftershocks which have followed last month's earthquake, whose magnitude was over 8.
Hours after today’s quake, officials said damage had been minor.
Seven people were taken to local hospitals. Three had been injured as they tried to flee their homes during the quake and the others had anxiety attacks, police said.
