Berlin - The writer Stefan Heym, a leading light in East German literature who died at the age of 88 in Israel, was buried yesterday in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin in the presence of the German Chancellor, Mr Gerhard Schr÷der.

The Berlin Communist leader, Mr Gregor Gysi, and Mr Wolfgang Thierse, president of the Bundestag, Germany's lower house, also attended the burial.
