Lansdowne Road Stadium Development Company (LRSDC), which is building the 50,000-seater stadium on behalf of the Irish Rugby Football Union and the Football Association of Ireland said it was "delighted" by An Bord Pleanála's decision to grant planning permission.

"While we always believed we had a very strong planning permission from Dublin City Council, we could not be certain as to the final decision by An Bord Pleanála." LRSDC said it was confident it could meet the board's planning conditions, which are minor in nature, but include the establishment of a €75,000 annual community project fund, and said the Bord Pleanála decision was testament to the fact the LRSDC had listened to the concerns of the local community.

"We believe that today's decision is recognition of the fact that we consulted widely on the project and, where possible, tried to address the concerns of the local community in our final design."

It also praised the Government and Minister for Sport John O'Donoghue for the €191 million given in support of the the project. Mr O'Donoghue said last night that the decision was "extremely welcome news for Irish sport".
