Colombo - Sri Lankan police and security forces were placed on red alert Monday to curb election-related violence as one more opposition supporter was shot dead ahead of a key council poll, officials said.

Gunmen shot dead an opposition United National Party (UNP) activist and wounded two others hours after a UNP office was bombed in the central region of Kegalle, killing a party worker on Sunday, police said.
