Ebbe Skovdahl will sever all ties with Aberdeen next week after Gardner Speirs was today appointed as caretaker manager.
Skovdahl announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season - or until a successor was found - last week.
However, after a disappointing home defeat by Kilmarnock on Tuesday, the club have moved to steady the ship by offering Speirs the chance to impress with Drew Jarvie as his assistant.
Skovdahl will now meet Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness next week to discuss his severance package from the club before ending his four-year tenure at Pittodrie.
An Aberdeen spokesman said: "Ebbe is not involved in the preparations of the first team for Saturday's game against Motherwell.
"He will meet with Keith Wyness next week to dot the i's and cross the t's.
"Ebbe is still around until then and we are sure he will help out if Gardner wants to sound him out."
Coventry assistant boss and Dons legend Eric Black had emerged as a favourite to land the job but has already told Sky Blues chairman Mike McGinnity he wants to stay in the midlands.
Former Scotland captain Bruce Rioch has expressed his interest in the role while Inverness have admitted they will not stand in the way of Steve Paterson if he is approached by the Dons.
Meanwhile, Wyness insists the interim appointment of Speirs and Jarvie will serve as a steadying influence as the Dons search for a successor to Skovdahl.
