The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has recalled a soya drink called Bonsoy after it was found to contain high levels of iodine.

One of the ingredients of the drink is a Japanese seaweed called Kombu, which naturally contains iodine, an essential element required to produce thyroid hormones.

However, excess iodine can affect the function of the thyroid gland and may cause some people to feel unwell.

Consumers are being warned not to consume the Bonsoy product, which is packaged in one litre cartons and has a best before date of up to and including November 3rd, 2011.

The FSAI said it is contacting Irish distributors and suppliers of Bonsoy to ensure that all affected product is withdrawn from sale. The drink has already been recalled in Australia and New Zealand.
