Scientists are attempting to trace the source of the potentially deadly E coli 0157 diagnosed in a woman in Cork. The woman had sought medical tests for other ailments. The bug killed 20 in Scotland two years ago.

Meanwhile, the pig processing line at the Midland Meats factory in Kilbeggan will reopen on Monday, Westmeath County Council confirmed yesterday. The plant had supplied the Midland Meats shop in Dundrum, Co Dublin, which was closed due to an outbreak of salmonella traced back to pork products. Mr Eddie Hynes, administrative officer with Westmeath County Council, said: "The investigation is now centred on the five or six potential sources of the salmonella at farm level."
