A soldier who claimed he suffered noise-induced deafness while serving in the Army was awarded £40,000 damages by Mr Justice Johnson in the High Court yesterday.

Cpl James Thomas Pearse (33), of Mullacash, Naas, Co Kildare, claimed he had become aware on December 22nd, 1996, that his deafness and tinnitus were noise-induced and contracted by reason of the negligence of the defendant, the State.
