A BRITISH soldier was injured last night in a riot in Lurgan, Co Armagh

A BRITISH soldier was injured last night in a riot in Lurgan, Co Armagh. The RUC and British army were attacked by around 150 nationalist youths. The crowd threw petrol bombs and the police fired plastic bullets in response.

The police had been trying to clear a section of the main Belfast to Dublin rail line, near the Kilwilkie estate, when the trouble started. The railway line has been closed since a suspect package was discovered there at the weekend.

After the riot, the police and army withdrew from the area, which was said to be quiet late last night. The soldier suffered facial injuries. The railway remains closed.
