Forty-four people have died in the crash of a Slovak army plane carrying peacekeepers from the Nato-led force in Kosovo back home yesterday.

"Forty-four people died, this is certain, and one survived," a Hungarian police spokesman said today.

The crash occurred 250 kilometres from the Hungarian capital, Budapest, and only 20 kilometres from the Slovak base in Kosice which the troops were being flown to.
