Freetown - Government troops in Sierra Leone said they had beaten off rebel attacks on the front line yesterday and the Liberian President, Mr Charles Taylor, warned the fighting could frustrate efforts to free UN hostages.

The Sierra Leone Army (SLA) commander at Rogberi Junction, 87 km north-east of the capital Freetown, said his troops had beaten off Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels who attacked the key crossroads twice after midnight, killing one of his men.
