Gardaí in Limerick are investigating an attempted armed robbery on a security van this morning.

A Garda statement said a man armed with a gun held up security staff shortly after 9am as cash was being transferred from the security van to a bank. The man fired a shot and attempted to grab a container.

"Security staff resisted and the raider fled and tried to hijack a car; he was then picked up by a second man on a motorbike which drove off towards Quinn's roundabout," the statement said.

The bike was located at Old Mungret graveyard.

A Garda spokesman said one member of the security team suffered injuries in the struggle that were unrelated to the gunshot.

Any one with information or who may have witnessed the attempted robbery is asked to contact the Garda at Roxboro Road on 061-214340.
