Abidjan - Shops and businesses in Ivory Coast reopened yesterday and life began returning to normal after what the president said was an amateurish coup attempt.

The main city, Abidjan, remained tense and witnesses reported hearing a short burst of gunfire in the central business district shortly after the overnight curfew ended at 6 a.m.

Witnesses in the city's Cocody district said they heard two explosions a few minutes apart.
