Two Fine Gael backbenchers have declined to comment on reports that they may stand down at the next general election.

Mr Jim Mitchell, Dublin Central, and Mr Alan Shatter, Dublin South, are reported to be unhappy with their lack of promotion since Fine Gael returned to government.

Mr Mitchell has been a TD since 1977 and a minister in governments led by Dr Garret FitzGerald, while Mr Shatter has been a TD since 1981 and is a former member of the party's front bench.
