ISLAMABAD - The new Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr Nawaz Sharil, in an apparent political coup, unveiled plans yesterday to amend the constitution, curtail the powers of the president and let "the light of democracy" shine on Pakistan.

He said in a televised broadcast his Pakistan Muslim League Party and its allies had decided to repeal parts of the constitution's controversial Eighth Amendment, which empowers the president to sack a prime minister, dissolve parliament and appoint armed forces chiefs.

Earlier in New Delhi, Indian and Pakistani diplomats ended four days of talks aimed at reducing tension between the bitter south Asian rivals and agreed to meet again in Islamabad, the Pakistan capital.
