A series of violent attacks in Northern Ireland last night has left two men recovering in hospital with serious injuries.

In Derry a man in his 20s was found shot in the leg and was taken to hospital. An RUC spokeswoman said police are following a definite line of inquiry.

Elsewhere in Derry the RUC is investigating reports a number of masked men tried to force their way into a house in Drumleck Gardens in the Shantallow area. There were no injuries or arrests.

A 22-year-old man is also being treated in hospital for severe bruising after he was attacked in his home in Coleraine by four masked men.

The RUC said two of the assailants beat the man with a baton in an upstairs bedroom. The four attackers then fled along the Bushmills Road. No motive has been established.

Police were called to a Derry estate last night where residents reported a number of petrol bombs being thrown at their houses. Five burned-out petrol bombs were found at the scene but there were no injuries or property damage after the attack.

In Rathfriland in Co Down the RUC was called to a house in Castle Heights, where the remains of two petrol bombs were found in front of a house. Again there were no injuries reported.
