Serbia said today it would soon begin exhuming a fourth mass grave, presumed to hold the remains of at least 50 ethnic Albanians from Kosovo killed in 1999.

The bodies in the grave were discovered that year in a freezer truck in the Perucac lake in western Serbia, according to a report on the government's website Serbia Info.

The find was hushed up by the administration of Mr Slobodan Milosevic, who now faces a UN trial for alleged war crimes.

It was the second case of a freezer truck full of bodies to have come to light in the past few months.

In April 1999 another freezer truck full of bodies was found, in Perucac, the report said, quoting the deputy head of the Serbian police's anti-organised crime department Mr Dragan Karleusa.

At first only two bodies surfaced, but two days later an entire box with 50 to 60 bodies appeared at the lake shore, he said. Under cover of night, all the bodies found were taken to another location and buried in a mass grave, the report said.

Perucac is a lake attached to the Bajina Basta power plant bordering Bosnia, about 150 km (75 miles) southwest of Belgrade. The report did not say where the mass grave was.

Mr Karleusa said there had been many witnesses to the discovery of the truck and subsequent transfer of the bodies.

"Right now preparations are being made and the case will, by the book, be delivered to the prosecutor's office which will carry out an exhumation", he said, confirming that police suspected the bodies came from Kosovo.
