The final set of a series of paintings depicting the lives of the apostles was unveiled at Dublin's Newman University Church in Dublin last night.
It followed Mozart's Requiem Mass, celebrated by the parish priest, Fr Pearce Walsh, to mark All Souls' Day, the 150th anniversary of the church and for all those associated with UCD. Among the attendance were Attracta Halpin, registrar of UCD; the chancellor of the NUI, Garret FitzGerald; and UCD vice-president Pádraic Conway.
The Mass was sung by the Lassus Scholars and Piccolo Lasso.
Another set of paintings was unveiled at the church last May. Both sets, by Istanbul-born artist Levent Tuncer, who is based in New York, are copies of those installed in the church 150 years ago, which had not been possible to restore.
They were themselves copies of a series of large Raphael tapestries designed for the Vatican's Sistine Chapel and the abbey church of Tre Fontaine outside Rome.
Funding for the new paintings was provided by the Office of the Taoiseach, while the work was carried
out under the supervision of the Office of Public Works.
