An 18-year-old Cork man who had been on a life-support machine since the weekend after a car crash in which a friend lost his life has died at the Cork University Hospital.

The family of Mr Brian Hartnett, from Clonakilty, confirmed yesterday that the life-support system was turned off on Monday night and that his organs had been donated for medical purposes.

The car in which he was travelling with four companions hit a bollard at Lisselton, near Clonakilty, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

His friend, Mr Roy Bennett (19), died instantly in the crash, and another friend, Mr David O'Sullivan, also from Clonakilty, remains on a life-support machine at the hospital, where his condition is critical.
