Around 300 mourners, many of them young people, yesterday attended the funeral in Portadown, Co Armagh, of one of the teenagers stabbed to death in what is believed to be an internal loyalist feud.

David McIlwaine (18) was found dead by a roadside in Tandragee, Co Armagh, at the weekend along with his friend, Andrew Robb (19). The killings are thought to be linked to a feud between the Ulster Volunteer Force and the Loyalist Volunteer Force.

Mr Robb was buried on Monday. Leading loyalist paramilitary figures attended his funeral, but stayed away from yesterday's service. The McIlwaines had asked that politicians and paramilitaries should not attend.

The only politician present was a DUP Assembly member, Mr Paul Berry, who is a friend of the family. Mr Berry wept during the service. Many of Mr McIlwaine's school friends, who gathered earlier outside his home at The Laurels, were also in tears.

Among those present were staff and pupils from the Upper Bann Institute of Further Education, where Mr McIlwaine was studying graphic design. Staff and several senior pupils from Brownlow College also attended.

A short service was conducted by Pastor Harry Dowds, of Drumgor Baptist Church in Craigavon, who said that Mr McIlwaine had been "only a boy". The service was relayed to the crowd by loudspeakers. Mr McIlwaine's father, Paul, read from his son's Bible. "David died as he lived, a peaceful lad", he said.

An uncle of Mr McIlwaine said that representatives of every political party as well as people from the nationalist Garvaghy Road had visited the family's home to offer condolences.

Several people who were arrested in connection with the double killing have been released without charge.

Mr McIlwaine and Mr Robb were found stabbed to death after leaving a night-club in Tandragee early on Saturday. The RUC has renewed its appeal for anyone with information about their final movements to come forward.
