Gardai in Carlow town have issued descriptions of two men who abducted a young woman at the weekend.

The men broke into the woman's home early on Saturday, forced her at knifepoint to dress and took her to a shed in Green Road National School where one of the men sexually assaulted her.

One man left at that point, but another, in his late 20s, kept the woman captive and took her to Munnelly's service station on the Kilkenny Road between 9.30 a.m. and 10 a.m. where he bought cigarettes before releasing her.

Gardai investigating the crime are anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area near the Regional Technical College, the national school or the service station on Saturday morning and may have seen the man and the woman.

The man who accompanied the woman to the service station was described as 5 10" tall, of sturdy build with short brown untidy hair. He has a distinctive dimple on his chin. He was wearing a grey fleece top with a blue hooded tracksuit top underneath, dark denim jeans and black boots.

The other man who left earlier is described as around 5 6" tall, of slim athletic build. He left the woman in darkness, and her only recollection was that he was wearing dark clothes.

Gardai say there is no evidence to connect the incident with any other sexual assaults or incidents involving disappearance or attempted abduction.

Supt Maurice Regan, of Carlow Garda station, said the young woman who had undergone the ordeal had recovered and the investigation into the abduction and assault was progressing.
