A search was resumed at low water last night for the body of a young man who got into difficulties while swimming near Myrtleville, Cross haven, Co Cork, yesterday.

Three teenagers tried to save him after he got into difficulties. Liz Fitzgerald, Emer Cotter and Eorann Murtagh were swimming near the man when he got into difficulties in strong waves. They tried to keep him afloat but were forced to release him when strong currents began to drag them all underwater.

Onlookers raised the alarm and an Irish Marine Emergency Services helicopter from Shannon carried out a search. Gardai did not release the man's name last night but it is believed he is in his late 20s or early 30s and is from Cork city.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, gardai have appealed for help to identify the body of a man recovered from the River Lee near the Lee Fields upstream of Cork city on Friday. The man, in his 50s or 60s - was fully dressed and was wearing several layers of clothing on his upper body. He was also carrying a silver medal with the inscription "Good Luck, McGinty".
