Within hours of Mr William Hague declaring his intention to stand down as Tory leader, Scots Tory chairman Mr Raymond Robertson announced he was following suit after a night which saw his party fail to capture its key target seats.

Meanwhile the Scots Tory president, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who failed to regain Edinburgh Pentlands for his party, dismissed talk of a Scottish Tory party breakaway as "complete nonsense".
