The Scottish town of Dumfries, just north of the English border, was rocked by an earthquake on Sunday measuring 2.9 on the Richter Scale, the British Geological Survey said.

It was the largest quake to hit the town since one measuring 2.7 in February 1984, the organisation said.

The tremors were felt in the north-western part of the town at 9.26 a.m. Residents reported entire houses shaking and neighbours fled shouting into their gardens, a spokesman for the Geological Survey said.

No damage or injuries were reported.
