London - Scientists in New York believe they may have found a way to block the development of variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease, the human form of BSE, which has until now invariably been fatal.

Turning their research into a medicine that could save lives was still uncertain and a long way off, said Mr Claudio Soto and an international team of scientists, who published an early report of their work in this week's issue of the Lancet.

But doctors and patients will be excited by the potential of their research which offers the first hope, albeit distant, for those with variant CJD.
