Saoire pleases trainer ahead of Oaks

Frances Crowley today confirmed Saoire on course for a Classic double in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Sunday.

A short-head winner of the Irish 1000 Guineas earlier this season, the daughter of Pivotal was hampered at a crucial stage of the Pretty Polly Stakes last month when finishing eighth behind Alexander Goldrun.

But  she was only beaten three lengths and has reportedly thrived since.

Crowley said: "This weekend will be her first crack at a mile and half, but we are not worried about the trip and we have always thought of her as an Oaks filly.

"She is very well, but really got no race in the Pretty Polly. She came home and ate up every scrap of grub that night and has been fine ever since.

"She was in season during that race, but I don't think that had any bearing on her performance. She has run well on both fast and yielding ground so I am not worried about the ground.

"I think, and hope, that she is improving with every run and this will be her fourth run of the season. She will have a little break after it and we will just have to hope that everything goes well."

With the sun having shone on the Curragh over the weekend, officials at the track started watering this morning and manager Paul Hensey reports the ground as good to firm.

"The forecast is for mainly dry weather between now and Thursday, but there is the possibility of some rain on Friday," he said. "I am not sure how much we will get as it is difficult to predict this far ahead.

"Based on the forecast, though, we have commenced watering this morning and we will continue through until Wednesday when we will make a decision on the second half of the week, based on a more accurate forecast."
