The Samaritans have chosen today as their first awareness and fundraising day in Ireland.

The Samaritans have chosen today as their first awareness and fundraising day in Ireland.

Today is the the 24th day of the seventh month, and the charity believes the symbolism of "24/7" will act as reminder that it provides confidential support to anyone in emotional distress every hour of every day all year round.

A "Samaritans car" with a team of drivers set out from Dublin at midnight and will visit all 20 branches within 24 hours.

The vehicle will be welcomed at each office by local dignitaries and celebrities. The car will also be carrying the Olympic torch, a symbol of light and hope.
