Vatican City - South Africa's Catholic bishops have decided there was nothing irregular about President Clinton taking Communion during his visit there last month, the Vatican news agency, Fides, reported yesterday.

South Africa's Catholic bishops received scores of protest letters from around the world after Mr Clinton and his wife Hillary received Communion at a Soweto township church during their four-day visit to South Africa.

South Africa's episcopal conference considered the issue and decreed that everything was entirely "regular" for a nonCatholic to receive Communion "when they take the initiative and express a clear wish to do so".
