London - An account of the Rwandan genocide by New York journalist Philip Gourevitch has won the inaugural Guardian First Book Award. The book's title is taken from a letter by Tutsi priests to a Hutu counterpart, who shunned them during the 100 days in 1994 when 800,000 people died.
