London - An account of the Rwandan genocide by New York journalist Philip Gourevitch has won the inaugural Guardian First Book Award. We wish to inform you that we are to die tomorrow was described by the judges as "more than just a great piece of journalism, but a monument to events which defy comprehension".

The book's title is taken from a letter by Tutsi priests to a Hutu counterpart, who shunned them during the 100 days in 1994 when 800,000 people died.
