An operation to raise the wreck of the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk

from the Arctic seabed should be completed by late September, a senior Russian official was quoted as saying today.

Russian news agencies quoted Deputy Prime Minister Mr Ilya Klebanov as telling reporters it would take three months to raise the submarine, which sank last August in the Barents Sea, killing all 118 men on board.

The operation would be completed around September 20th, he said.

Mr Klebanov said the decision on launching the operation was taken at a meeting on Saturday of the commission he has headed investigating the cause of the two explosions which sent the Kurskto the bottom of the sea.
