Tehran - Iran's attorney general said yesterday the fatwa condemning the British author Salman Rushdie to death is irrevocable and must be carried out.

"It is not a simple religious decree but a verdict or sentence which condemns the infidel Rushdie to death," Ayatollah Morteza Moghtadai said on the eve of the ninth anniversary of the fatwa against Rushdie. "It is an irreversible judgement and must be implemented," he said at Tehran university. --(AFP)
