An aircraft full of rugby supporters returning from Ireland's win in Cardiff had to be evacuated after landing at Shannon on Sunday night when smoke escaped into the cabin.

Ryanair flight FR1137 from Bristol touched down on schedule at 11.17pm. However, on landing smoke was seen in the forward cabin area.

The pilot sought the assistance of the airport's fire and rescue service.

It is thought that the smoke resulted from heavy braking as the aircraft landed.

The 162 passengers on board were evacuated from the aircraft, and taken by coaches to the terminal building.

The aircraft was later towed to its stand, where engineers inspected the undercarriage.

Airport crews carried out a detailed inspection of Shannon's main runway to ensure that no debris was left on the landing strip following the landing.

While fire crews dealt with the incident, one aircraft was prevented from landing for almost half and hour and circled the airport.

An airport spokesperson said: "The aircraft had hot brakes and was assisted by our own airport police and fire service.

"The 162 passengers were taken off the aircraft on the taxiway as a precaution, and the aircraft had to be towed on stand."

A statement from Ryanair said: "Flight FR1137 landed normally in Shannon at 23.17, and after landing the pilot requested a check of a possible defect.

"No defect was found and passengers disembarked normally."
