A new 10-part crime series on RTE will take viewers behind the scenes of a number of major Garda investigations for the first time.
Solved and Unsolved, which is produced with the full co-operation of the Garda, will also feature appeals for fresh information about the disappearances of a number of women. Gardai will renew their plea for information regarding the disappearances of Kilkenny woman Ms Jo-Jo Dullard and American student Ms Annie McCarrick, among others.
Solved and Unsolved, which is being produced by Eclipse Television, the makers of Crimeline, begins on RTE 1 next month.
"In relation to the unsolved cases, it is very much a case of trying to revive cold cases. It will coincide with the fresh investigation into these cases," said its presenter, David Harvey.
The series begins with an examination of the investigation into the murder of Dublin civil servant Ms Marilyn Rynn, whose body was found in a thicket close to the Tolka Valley, 16 days after she vanished just before Christmas 1966.
Gardai tell how DNA matching techniques led to the identification of her killer and how future investigations may involve compulsory DNA testing of male suspects in cases of this type. The programme also includes footage of investigation team conferences and operations and interviews with members of Ms Rynn's family.
Subsequent episodes will demonstrate the significant role played by forensic evidence in solving criminal cases. Gardai will also make fresh appeals for information in the cases, including those of Ms Dullard, Ms McCarrick and Dublin schoolboy Phillip Cairns.
Mr John McCarrick will speak about his continued search for his daughter, more than five years after she disappeared in Dublin.
