Rosy eloquence fails to win lover

Verona - Some 1,500 roses failed to persuade a young Italian woman to go back on a decision

Verona - Some 1,500 roses failed to persuade a young Italian woman to go back on a decision. Alessandra of Verona had broken off her engagement with Roberto so he decided to send her 1,480 roses - one for each day of their engagement.

A florist, who pocketed some £4,000 from Roberto's gallant but vain gesture, happily delivered the flowers to a restaurant where Alessandra was dining with her family. When Roberto arrived on horseback to deliver the last flower himself Alessandra said "thanks but no thanks" and went back to her meal.
