Tehran - Forty-four people were arrested after riots broke out in the central Iranian city of Isfahan against the rising water shortage, newspapers reported yesterday.

According to the conservative Qods newspaper, inhabitants of Isfahan held a gathering on Sunday to protest over the water shortage following a call from a local cleric in the provincial capital. Demonstrators initially protested peacefully, but later began rioting as their numbers grew to more than 200.
