Rioting breaks out in north Belfast

Sectarian fighting broke out this afternoon on the Ardoyne Road in north Belfast.

Sectarian fighting broke out this afternoon on the Ardoyne Road in north Belfast.

Cordons were set up as the police and British army moved in to separate the rioters.

Plastic baton rounds were fired as the rival gangs clashed. Blast bombs, petrol bombs, stones and fireworks were hurled by about 150 rioters.

A suspect pipebomb on Twadell Avenue was found to be harmless.

At the time of writing, police describe the situation as "tense but quiet".
